Stewart Balon Edge with FireHawk Surface
When it comes to the best price to picture quality ratio, the Stewart Balon Edge with the FireHawk surface is our projection expert’s #1 recommended pick for home theaters.
The sleek stylish border fits just about any cinema room while the surface is perfect for watching your favorite movies.
The Balon Edge Series
This home cinema projector screen system provides a thin, black border that nicely frames the picture. The half-inch black, Velux light absorbing border provides just a touch of projector overscan relief while still providing maximum on-screen image. With a tight, crisp edge you can still go large!
It can even come included with a built-in LED kit.
The FireHawk Screen Surface
FireHawk, in its fifth generation, is a flexible, front projection, screen surface engineered for use with today’s high-powered projection technology in applications involving the presence of ambient light.
Ambient light is the enemy of two-piece projection. Screens designed to reject ambient light can be effective at furnishing an image in even the brightest of rooms, but the trade-off is the presence of unwanted artifacts such as color-shift, hot-spotting, and poor off-axis viewing. Stewart Filmscreen is in the business of image fidelity, and FireHawk was designed to provide the best possible trade-off between image fidelity and ambient light resistance. With improvements to uniformity and off-axis viewing, FireHawk G4 is even closer to the reference quality and image fidelity that have long been synonymous with Stewart Filmscreen.

The Black Diamond Screen Surface
Not everyone wants to retreat to a darkened theater room to enjoy watching the game, or playing video games with friends and family. Screen Innovations solved this problem in 2008 with the Black Diamond screen surface, the first (and still the only) optical screen that rejects light from above, below, and on both sides.
Thanks to 9 layers of optical filters which reject 85% of ambient light in the room. Black Diamond screen surfaces are measured to provide a 900% increase in contrast over standard matte white or gray screens.
The same optical filters that reject ambient light from above, below and on the sides of Black Diamond also function to eliminate reflected light from spilling back onto the walls, ceiling, and floor. Not only does this create a more immersive dark room experience, but eliminates the need for blacking out these adjacent walls.

How do I choose a home theater projector screen?
Selecting a home cinema screen is not a one size fits all endeavor. Each movie theater room and each home cinema enthusiast is going to have unique needs and wants for their given situation.
There are 5 steps to choosing a home theater screen: choosing the aspect ratio, the projector screen size, the projection surface, the type of screen and the special features.
Aspect Ratio
The aspect ratio is the dimensions of a screen. You’ll typically see this shown as a width to height ratio.
There are two aspect ratios that are the best for home movie theater screens: HDTV and CinemaScope.
HDTV
The dimensions of an HDTV home cinema screen is 16:9 (you might also see it referred to as 1.78:1). This is by far the most popular projection screen aspect ratio for home theaters as most streaming and TV content is produced in a 16:9 format. This aspect ratio also gives you the closest ratio to most modern film formats with the least amount of letterboxing.
If you want to use your theater room to watch a mix of television shows, streaming content and movies, a 16:9 HDTV cinema screen is your best choice.
CinemaScope
CinemaScope screens come in either a modern 2.35:1 ratio or a classic 2.4:1 ratio.
If you’re a cinephile who’s bothered by the black bars around the screen when you watch a movie and will mostly use your home theater room to watch films then a CinemaScope projection screen is the way to go.
Multiformat Masking Screens
A multiformat screen with masking capabilities is the go to option if you want to watch both TV and movies but really hate any kind of letterboxing on your screen. These versatile film screens can transform to the correct dimensions using blackout curtains to mask the unused part of the screen.
Home Theater Screen Sizes
The second step is to determine the size screen you need for your movie room. Many shoppers ask "What is the best screen size for home theaters?"
The right screen size is determined by a combination of how big your space is and how bright your projector is. You can use this projector screen distance calculator to help you determine the best size.
For most projector screen sizes for home theater you’ll want to get a display that’s between 100 inches and 150 inches. The most popular home cinema projector screen size is 120 inches.
If you’re debating between two screen sizes go with the bigger one. No one has ever said, “I wish I had bought a smaller screen.”
Projector Screen surface
If you want a truly cinematic experience in your house, the screen surface makes all the difference. For most setups there are four aspects you need to take into account for your home cinema projection screen: surface texture, screen color, gain and viewing angle.
Textureless Projector Screens
You might think that any seemingly smooth surface would work as a projection display. However, without a totally textureless surface your image won’t look as sharp as it should. With a projector shining on it you’ll see every bump and imperfection.
Furthermore, if you’re using a 4K home theater projector, without a textureless surface you’ll see significant degradation to the pixel geometry meaning you’re wasting your money by losing out on the image details of an ultra high def projector. 4K projector pixels reflect uniformly off of a smooth UHD projection surface giving your home cinema the incredibly detailed video display you want.
Be Aware
Many cheaper projector screen manufacturers claim their home theater screens are “4K ready” however that doesn’t mean they’re compatible with a 4K projector because these screens are too textured to support the tiny pixels of a UHD device.
Screen Color
For most people when they think about projection screens they picture a white surface. However for setups you’ll want to get a grey, silver or even a black home cinema screen. A black or grey projection surface provides your image better black levels than a plain white display. With movie and TV watching, you want the deepest black levels possible for that cinematic feel.
Screen Gain
Every projector screen works by reflecting the light of a projector off the surface and to the audience's eyes.
The brightness of the image reflected back off of the screen's surface is measured in units of "gain", gauging the reflectivity of that surface.
Depending on the brightness of your digital projector you may want to consider getting a lower gain screen to prevent hotspotting. Lower gain screens also help bring out more vivid blacks and enhance a projector’s native contrast ratio.
If you have a less bright projector you may want to consider getting a film screen with a higher gain so more light gets reflected back towards the audience.
For a home theater screen you typically want to get a screen with a 1.0 gain or below.
Viewing Angle
The viewing angle is the angle the screen traverses in the viewer’s front vision from the far left of the screen to the far right.
It’s recommended that you have a viewing angle between 30 to 40 degrees for optimal viewing. At wider angles the image will appear dimmer and washed out because the light reflecting of the screen isn’t reflecting as much at that angle.
Some projection screens have wider viewing angles than others. So if you’re planning to use your display in a wider room, you need to make sure it has a wider viewing angle.
Type of Cinema Screen
While there are loads of options to choose from for the type of cinema screen, from retractable to foldable to inflatable, because you’ll be using your screen in a dedicated theater room it typically makes the most sense to go with a fixed frame projector screen that’s mounted on the wall.
This will also help you save money compared to a retractable screen.
That said, some enthusiasts do prefer a retractable home cinema screen either to showcase some artwork or design behind it or protect the screen surface from dust or kids.
Special Features
The last aspect to think about are the special features you want included with your home movie theater screen. There are a number of special features that could improve your viewing experience including: ambient light rejection, acoustically transparent, curved screen and borderless.
Ambient Light Rejecting
A projector screen with ambient light rejection allows a projector to be used even in a well lit room by reflecting the light of the room away from the viewer and only reflecting the light from the projector.
You might be thinking, “why do I need an ambient light rejecting screen in my light controlled home theater?”
The need for an ALR home cinema screen depends on if you plan to only watch movies or if you also plan to watch TV shows or social sporting events like the Super Bowl or if you like to play video games. These are activities where you’d typically want to have the lights on so by getting an ambient light rejecting cinema screen you can both watch movies in the dark and gather socially to watch without losing any picture quality.
Acoustically Transparent
Acoustically Transparent home theater screens are a popular choice among movie loving audiophiles.
An acoustically transparent projector screen for home cinemas is best suited in a scenario when speakers need to be placed behind the projection screen and you do not want to sound waves to interact with the screen, moving the projection surface and causing rippling to the image or diminishing the quality of the audio by blocking the sound waves.
These screens are particularly useful when there is not enough space in the screening room to have the speakers placed on the side of the screen and one does not want to get a smaller screen in order to leave room for the speakers on the side.
Many people also prefer the illusion of the character’s voices coming from “behind” the picture as opposed to the sides or beneath it as it emulates the characters talking.
Curved
Some home movie theater enthusiasts want to have a curved projector screen. To them, curved home cinema screens provide a more immersive film watching experience because the screen surrounds you more.
Most of our customers however find the experience in their media room with a flat projector screen to be just as immersive.
Borderless
Some in-home cinema owners like a minimalist look so borderless projector screens are just right for them. However we typically don’t recommend borderless projector screens for home theaters because it’s nearly impossible to perfectly line up the image of the projector. This means you’ll likely have a sliver of light bleed around the edges of the screen unless you spend hours trying to align your projector.
How Much Does A Home Theater Screen Cost?
The price of a home theater projection screen of course has a number of factors that can impact the cost. As we've established above, the quality of your projector screen is crucial to achieving a great picture in your home theater. A high-quality screen will last for many years, and it's just as important as the projector itself in producing an outstanding image. This is why it's important to invest in the projection surface for your personal movie theater.
A good 120" 16:9 screen usually starts around $1,800, while the excellent ones of the same size cost a little over $3,000, which is definitely worth the investment. Choosing a screen that is below this price range may result in a compromise in the performance that your projector can deliver and degrade the value in the rest of your equipment investment.
