Do You Need A Special Projector Screen For Ultra Short Throw Projectors?

While you can project an image using a UST on any surface, the picture quality degrades significantly without a specialized screen. If you want the true 4K UHD movie experience in your well-lit living room your best bet is to use a specifically designed ultra short throw projector screen.

What Makes A UST Projection Screen?

An ultra short throw projection screen has a few features that make it the ideal pairing with a laser TV. These properties include Ambient Light Rejection (ALR), screen size, and screen gain.

Ambient Light Rejection Screen

The Ambient Light Rejecting properties are the most important feature for a UST projector screen. This is because it blocks ambient light from sources other than your laser TV.

An ALR screen uses an angular reflective surface to reflect ambient light from higher angles while reflecting light from the projector below towards the viewer. This provides you with a much brighter picture whereas a regular projection screen will look dull and washed out in a well-lit room that has more ambient light.

Screen Gain

A projection screen works by reflecting the light back from the projector to your audience’s eyes. The reflectivity of that surface is a measurement called Gain.

The higher the gain the more light that gets reflected back to the viewer. The lower the gain, the more light that gets absorbed by the screen.

Now you might think that for a UST screen you’d want to have a higher gain screen because more light means a brighter image, right? In fact, lower gain is better for a laser TV screen. This is because a low gain surface reflects not just the projector at a diminished ratio but also the ambient light of the room. This allows the ultra short throws to perform better in a well lit apartment or den.

Because of their brightness, the light cast from the laser projection TV easily overcomes the diminished brightness of the low gain projector screen.

Another reason low gain screens pair well with a UST projector is that a screen with lower gain will absorb more light eliminating overexposed hot spots.

Screen Size

The third most important attribute of an ultra short throw movie screen is the screen’s size.

Because ultra short throws typically have fixed focal length they are limited in their screen size. In order to adjust the projector for a particular screen size you need to move the entire unit further away from the wall. Almost all 4K UST projectors can work with a screen size between 80 - 130 inches. A few can even produce an image size of 150 inches. So when you get your super short throw you’ll need to get a screen that matches that size.

The most common laser TV screen size is between 90 inches and 120 inches. The most popular UST screen size is 120" followed by 100".

Are There Different Types Of Ultra Short Throw Screens?

With ultra short throw screens you will just about always find ones that are ALR and have a low gain. While you can find a few motorized projector screens almost all are fixed frame ultra short throw screens. This is because the delicate construction of ALR screens with angular reflective properties can be damaged easily if the surface was continually rolled up and down. Keeping the display fixed prevents some of the wear and tear on the projection fabric’s surface giving you a better quality image for longer.

What Size Ultra Short Throw Projection Screens Are Available?

For the past few years most ultra short throw projectors were limited to making an image size of 120 inches. Because of this limitation screen manufacturers didn't create a surface above 120". Now that there are several laser TVs that can produce an image size of 150 inches, a few screen makers have noticed. Where you were once limited to a 120" screen size, you can now get a 130", 140" or even 150 inch ultra short throw projector screen. Currently the only 150" UST screen comes from Spectra Projection.

How Much Does An Ultra Short Throw Projector Screen Cost?

A movie screen that’s specially designed to work with ultra short throw projectors usually costs between $900 to $5000. This large price disparity is the result of the higher end screens being better engineered and manufactured. The better quality screens use a higher grade material with thinner and more defined ridges which will provide a significantly sharper and more clear image.

The more expensive frames will also be more robust and machined better to not have misalignments, gaps and other visible imperfections. Some of these high end screens are also motorized retractable screens which increases the price tag significantly but they do appear extra refined.

While you might be tempted to go for a less expensive UST projection screen, you need to keep in mind that a more expensive screen provides a picture quality that is miles above the cheaper options. That said, if you're looking to save on your ultra short throw cinema screen you may want to consider a Spectra Projection Vantage screen. They offer affordable 4K UST screens that are pretty close to the quality you'd get with the more expensive projection surfaces.
