JVC is a company known for producing some of the best residential projectors in the marketplace. Part of that success is owed to their regular roll out of firmware updates to improve what is already a phenomenal product offering.

Last year's firmware upgrade included improvements to Frame Adapt HDR, new Laser Dynamic Control mode for laser models and added a Filmmaker Mode.

Although the changes to this years firmware are not quite as major as the previous update, these new improvements will still have a significant impact on your home theater viewing experience.

What is a Firmware Update?

Before going into the details of the newest JVC projector firmware update, let's quickly cover the basics. Firmware is software embedded in hardware devices, like projectors, to control their functionality.

Updates to the software are periodically released by manufacturers to improve performance, add new features, fix bugs, and address compatibility issues. By keeping your projector's firmware up-to-date, you can ensure that you're getting the best possible performance and access to the latest features and most advanced settings. This will improve your experience either from a viewing perspective or for ease of use.

What does this new JVC 3.0 firmware update do?

Here are the enhancements you have to look forward to when you update to the 3.0 firmware on your JVC home theater projector.

Frame Adapt Generation 2 Tone Mapping

This year's update introduces notable improvements, with a focus on the second-generation Frame Adapt enhancements for JVC projectors. Essentially, these projectors support dynamic tone mapping through HDR10+ and Frame Adapt HDR. HDR10+ ensures scenes are displayed as intended using metadata, while Frame Adapt HDR analyzes peak brightness in HDR10 content, adjusting the dynamic range for optimal picture quality.

The software update enhances JVC's tone-mapping algorithm, providing more impressive HDR imagery by reducing excessive brightness in high-lit areas of a scene. Each scene and frame is analyzed and run through a new algorithm giving a more three-dimensional look to the flat image projected onto your screen.

After updating the software, users may notice a refined tone curve selection, resulting in brighter, more vibrant HDR images with a broader dynamic range compared to before the update. This difference is subtle but you'll notice a sizable improvement in the HDR picture quality.

Brightness Slider

One of the annoying settings on with the old firmware was that you were limited to "low," "medium," and "high" options for the brightness settings. With the update it gives you a slider from 0 to 100 so you can control with precision the level of brightness you want from your projector.

One of JVC's strengths is how typically customizable the calibration control settings are. This upgrade gives users even more control which is something many JVC owners have been waiting for.

USB Backup

One of the very specific fears many projection enthusiasts have is their carefully calibrated settings getting wiped.

With the new firmware update, JVC projector owners no longer need to live in fear. One of the new features is a USB backup option that offers peace of mind for those concerned about preserving their OSD settings.

Whether you're updating the software, making other changes, or if god forbid you need to send your projector in for maintenance, this simple but useful feature allows you to securely back up all your customized settings onto a USB drive or external hard drive.

All you have to do is plug your storage device into the USB port, go to the backup menu and choose to either import or export your settings. It's surprising such a simple feature wasn't included at launch.

When Will The Update Be Available?

The 3.0 firmware update was demoed at CEDIA 2023. They'll be making it available on the JVC website on November 15th.

What JVC Projectors Will This Be For?

This software update covers the DLA-NZ9, NZ8, NZ7 and NP5 (DLA-RS4100, RS3100, RS2100, RS1100) models.

How Do I Update My JVC's Firmware?

Required Equipment

  • A PC capable of connecting to the Internet, downloading the firmware for updating from our website and extracting the zip file.
  • USB drive (1 GB or more, FAT32 format)

The projector update process is pretty straightforward: simply download the software from JVC's official website, insert the USB drive into the USB port on the projector, navigate into the settings menu, and select the 'Update Software' option.

The whole update process should take you approximately 45 to 50 minutes, and once completed, you're all set to enjoy the new features.
