Introducing the Formovie Cinema Edge: A New Era in Affordable UST Projectors
Formovie, the brand behind the wildly popular Formovie Theater has just unveiled its latest addition to their ultra short throw projector lineup: the Formovie Cinema Edge.
This is the latest home projector announced in an avalanche of new 2024/2025 models by several top brands including the Samsung Premier 9, Hisense PX3-Pro, Epson QB1000 and XGIMI Aura 2.
The Formovie Cinema Edge is the North American version of the Cinema C3 but with several upgrades and new features. This is a 4K ultra short throw projector built for home entertainment. With the success seen by the Formovie Theater, we're confident that this new more affordable Formovie UST will also be a top seller.
Since we've got the insider information, we'll share what you can expect from the new Formovie Cinema Edge.
Laser Light Engine and Brightness Output
The Cinema Edge is a single laser projector that utilizes ALPD technology to produce a bright image with vibrant colors, high contrast and unrivaled black levels. This long lasting laser light source gives you 25,000 hours of consistent brilliance on your screen.
This new UST boasts 1,900 ISO lumens of brightness. (Note the use of ISO lumens as opposed to ANSI lumens. This is because the projection industry is beginning to transition to ISO measurements as a way to standardize reported lumens internationally.) The 1,900 lumens output from this projector are decent for less well lit rooms, but if you want a quality image, you'll want to pair your laser TV with a UST projector screen that rejects excess ambient light.
Color and Contrast
Covering 110% of the Rec.709 color gamut, the Formovie Cinema Edge promises excellent color reproduction. This is very impressive and will give you a colorful image, however the Formovie Theater with its triple laser light source can cover 107% of the more challenging BT.2020 color gamut.
One of the great features of the Cinema Edge is the 3000:1 contrast ratio (FOFO). Unlike other manufacturers who obscure contrast ratings by advertising dynamic contrast, Formovie gives you an accurate gauge of their high contrast projector. The fantastic contrast from this new laser TV allows the subtle differentiation of details in bright and dark images. This is largely thanks to the ALPD technology that gives deep black levels.
HDR Support
The Formovie Cinema Edge supports HDR10 and HLG but lacks Dolby Vision, which is available on the Formovie Theater.
Google TV (and Netflix)
Unlike many projectors that run on Android TV, the Cinema Edge operates on Google TV. This means that it not only has apps for your favorite streaming services like Hulu, Prime Video, and Max but also comes with Netflix preloaded. So now you can watch all your favorite shows and movies straight from your projector, minimizing external devices and eliminating the need for complicated side-loading.
This also gives you access to Google Assistant so you can find content and control the projector with voice commands.
Gaming
Gamers will appreciate the game mode, offering a 4K refresh rate at 60Hz and a 41.9 millisecond response time. This is a pretty good input lag, though more serious gamers should probably look elsewhere.
Built-In Audio
While it drops the height-channel capabilities of Dolby Atmos found in the Formovie Theater, the Cinema Edge includes Dolby Audio and DTS-X support through its two 15-watt internal speakers.
For enhanced sound however, we still recommend adding a high-quality external sound system.
Throw Ratio and Screen Size
The Formovie Cinema Edge possesses a 0.23:1 throw ratio, allowing it to project a 100-inch image from just 9 inches away. This is a middle of the road throw ratio compared to other USTs. For those seeking a larger display, this new Formovie UST can project images up to 150 inches.
Setup and Connectivity
The Cinema Edge measures 18 by 12 by 3.5 inches and weighs 15 pounds. It's low profile dark gray design allows it to fit in seamlessly with most rooms.
As we mentioned, the short throw distance and variable screen size give you a good amount of flexibility when it comes to installation. With a motorized focus and 8-point keystone correction, setting up the Cinema Edge is relatively straightforward.
This new Formovie UST also features three HDMI 2.1 ports (one with eARC) for connecting devices like gaming consoles, Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV Stick. It also allows for WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity.
How Much Does The Formovie Cinema Edge Cost?
Priced at a very competitive $2,500 MSRP, the Formovie Cinema Edge UST projector comes in at a very reasonable price tag. It's an especially great value when you consider the impressive contrast and color specifications, along with Google TV and native Netflix integration.
For those eager to get their hands on it, ProjectorScreen.com is offering a special price of $2,200 starting today on the Cinema Edge.
